Park E-Bike & E-Motorcycle Policy

Our parks & greenways are shared spaces designed for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy walking, running, cycling, and other recreational activities. To help keep these trails safe and enjoyable for everyone, please follow the guidelines below.

Permitted E-Bikes

Class 1 electric bicycles, Class 2 electric bicycles, and e-scooters are permitted on Town greenways and in parks unless otherwise posted.

What is a Class 1 E-Bike?

A Class 1 e-bike is an electric bicycle that:

  • Provides pedal-assist only, meaning the motor only works while the rider is pedaling.
  • Stops providing assistance when the bicycle reaches 20 mph.
  • Has an electric motor rated at 750 watts or less.

Class 1 e-bikes closely resemble traditional bicycles and are well suited for shared-use greenways.

What is a Class 2 E-Bike?

A Class 2 e-bike is an electric bicycle that:

  • Is equipped with a throttle, allowing the motor to propel the bicycle without pedaling.
  • May also provide pedal assistance.
  • Stops providing motor assistance at 20 mph.
  • Has an electric motor rated at 750 watts or less.

Prohibited Vehicles

Class 3 e-bikes, electric motorcycles (e-motos), golf carts, UTV's and all other vehicles are not permitted on Town greenways and in the parks.

What is a Class 3 E-Bike?

A Class 3 e-bike is an electric bicycle that:

  • Provides pedal-assist only (no throttle assistance).
  • Assists the rider up to 28 mph.
  • Is equipped with a motor of 750 watts or less.

Because Class 3 e-bikes are designed for higher speeds, they are not permitted on shared-use greenways where pedestrian safety is a priority.

What is an E-Moto?

An electric motorcycle (e-moto) is a two-wheeled, motor-driven vehicle designed primarily for motorized travel rather than bicycle use. E-motos typically:

  • Can operate without pedaling.
  • Have significantly greater power and acceleration than an electric bicycle.
  • May resemble a dirt bike or small motorcycle.
  • Often exceed the speed and performance capabilities of e-bikes.

E-motos are not permitted on Town greenways.

Trail Safety

Whether riding a bicycle or a permitted e-bike, all users are expected to:

  • Obey the posted speed limit of 15 mph.
  • Yield to pedestrians and slower trail users.
  • Ride in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment, including a properly fitted helmet. Additional protective gear such as gloves and eye protection is also encouraged.

Thank you for helping keep our greenways safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.
